Verdon Gorge & Lake of Sainte-Croix - France

A Visit to the Verdon Gorge & Lake of Sainte-Croix – France

In the most magnificent and awe inspiring land south eastern France in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence we find artificial Lake of Sainte-Croix and the Verdon Gorge formed by the Verdon River, which is named after its startling turquoise-green colors that changes magically with the sunlight of each advancing hour of the day. This area of France if well worth a visit and is still unknown to many.

It can be reached best by car, you can fly to Nice on the Cote d’Azure, rent a car there and drive up via the alpine roads or from the other side drive in via Manosque and Catellane. Now please be careful when feiving around the area roads are narrow and sometimes ver steep around the gorge, also fill up your cars gas tank before heading around the gorge as there are not many gass stations in the area. You can easily find great accommodation in a small Hotel in the area or as well rent a cabin ( see gites-de-france.com ) as we did in the area around the lake. There are also many camping grounds available around the lake and in the area.

Guess I dont have to tell you about the great food you can get anywhere in France with the great delicacies that can find in many Restaurants or just as we did buy some cheese, great bread and whatever makes you happy and enjoy it with some of the fine wines from the area. Things to do around there are plenty from just enjoying the landscape, to extensive hiking tours or a visit to the extensive Lavender fields where it is grown commercially mainly for the production of its essential oil, the extracts are used as fragrances for a variety of products. Look around for some local shops where they sell many of these fine locally produced creams soaps, fragrances or lavender honey as souvenirs and as a fine treat as well for yourself.

Its also recommeded to pay alittle vitit to the Musee de Prehistoire de Gorges du Verdon, located in Quison, see museeprehistoire.com for details, tarifs and opening hours. See also Wikitravel for more info on the general area of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur here.
