Carnival in Lucerne Switzerland

Party at the Carnival in Lucerne Switzerland

Lucerne, located in Central Switzerland, embedded in on the shore of Lake Lucerne (der Vierwaldstättersee) and within sight of Mount Pilatus and Rigi in the Swiss Alps, is all and by itself a top destination for tourists. Its cultural offerings include the Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre that is home to the is home to the 21st Century Symphony Orchestra, the Museum of Art Lucerne and besides other goodies one of my favorites is the The Swiss Museum of Transport on the shores of the lake.

Now that we got all that taken care of, here is another top attraction the most popular Carnival in Lucerne. The next carnival (“Fasnacht”) begins on 8 February and ends on 13 February. As described in Wikipedia: Every year, towards the end of winter, Carnival (Fasnacht) breaks out in the streets, alleyways and squares of the old town. This is a glittering outdoor party, where chaos and merriness reign and nothing is as it normally is. Strange characters in fantastic masks and costumes make their way through the alleyways, while carnival bands (Guggenmusigen) blow their instruments in joyful cacophony and thousands of bizarrely clad people sing and dance away the winter. Lucerne Carnival starts every year on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday with a big bang. There are big parades on Dirty Thursday and the following Monday, called Fat Monday, which attract tens of thousands of people. Lucerne’s Carnival ends with a crowning finish on Fat Tuesday evening with a tremendous parade of big bands, lights and lanterns. After the parade, all the bands wander through the city playing joyful music.

Behold its normaly cold that time of the year in Central Switzerland so get dressed appropriately, but know there are many good restaurants or even street bars open that serve hot beverages like the famous cafe luz (Lucerne Coffee) that is coffee with schnaps (so much, that the coffee is clear, its said you must be able to read a newspaper trough it) and dont miss the great food like you get in many places as well.

As long as your in this part of the world see also our page and images from the Swiss Rigi region nearby a good choice for another tour and day.

A visit to Eglisau hiking along the river Rhine

Eglisau Zurich Switzerland

Eglisau Zurich Switzerland

The historic village of Eglisau situated on the banks of the river Rhine is a picturesque old town only about 30 km from Zurich, Switzerland. It can be reached easily by car from Zurich or Schaffhausen or by train from both locations as well.

Its perfect for a weekend trip or Sunday trip for a nice hike along the river Rhine or a boats trip up river for relaxing sight seeing.

One recommended hike is the 1.2 km long wine trail that begins near the stately “Weierbachhus”, a former wine farmhouse, now a local museum and leads to the end of the town. See the attached image for the beautiful scenery that awaits you here. Along the way you can learn more about the wine yards.

But you may also do some more extensive hikes all the way to Ruedlingen or Flach, cross the river there and come back down along the river on the other side passing Toessegg where you can stop over for a refreshment and a meal from there hike back to Eglisau or take the boat to relax and enjoy views to the the wine yards that flank the river.

Impressive visit to the Rhine Falls in Switzerland

The Rhine Falls (Rheinfall in German) is the largest plain waterfall in Europe.

The falls are located on the High Rhine between the municipalities of Neuhausen am Rheinfall and Laufen-Uhwiesen, near the town of Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland, between the cantons of Schaffhausen and Zürich. They are 150 m (450 ft) wide and 23 m (75 ft) high. In the winter months, the average water flow is 250 m³/s, while in the summer, the average water flow is 700 m³/s. The highest flow ever measured was 1,250 m³/s in 1965; and the lowest, 95 m³/s in 1921.

The Rheinfall can be visited from 2 sides: Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall on the south side of the river, and Neuhausen Bad, 450 metres from the north side. Boats link the two sides. SLaR station is only open between 08:00 and 16:30 (18:30 during summer).

From Zürich: take S-Bahn S7, S8, S12 or S16 to Winterthur (not Schaffhausen). Change for line S33 towards Schaffhausen, and get off at SLaR (if closed, get off at Dachsen and take bus 634 from there). From Schaffhausen: Take S-Bahn S33 two stops to SLaR (for the south side), or a local train bound for Erzingen or Neuhausen Bad one stop to Neuhausen Bad (for the north side).

Visitors can see the waterfalls up close from several viewing platforms, and can also take a boat up to an outcropping in the middle of the falls. A speciality is the firework on the night of the 1st August (national holiday)

Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe - Switzerland

Visit The Top of Europe – Jungfraujoch, Switzerland

The Jungfraujoch is the the most exiting and highest place you can reach with a railway in Europe, you will have fantastic Panorama views to all sides from the Aletsch Glacier and to all the wonderful snow covered peaks of the Swiss alps, plus as extra bonus you may enjoy a walk inside the glacier in the Ice Palace. The railway journey to the Jungfraujoch is an experience which leads through the Eiger and the Mönch (see attached images). At the Eismeer and Eigerwand intermediate stations, visitors can enjoy the wonderful view. The Sphinx (3,571 meters or 11,716 feet) is a peak that lies just to the east of the col. It begins from the Jungfraujoch on the Valais side and at the Great Aletsch Glacier. There is an elevator to its summit, where a small viewing platform and a scientific observatory, the Sphinx Observatory, are located. from the Jungfraujoch top of Europe station there is also a good hike to the Mönchsjochhütte, that is if your fit for a walk in the snow, and there you find a restaurant that offers some good self service, as a hot soup comes in handy. Now beware if you are not fit for the altitude we dont recommend that trip, if in doubt consult with your doctor. Also please note that the intense radiation at high altitude requires sufficient sun protection for the skin and eyes! Timetables and opening hours plus other info can be found here at the Jungfraujoch website.

This exiting adventure can start at Bern in Switzerland then by train either to Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, you may stay there overnight and the next day get from either side with the train to the train station od the Kleine Scheidegg and from there up to the top of Europe. This area offers many great hiking trails in the summer time and of course many fantastic ski slops in the winter time.
